Roofing is an ancient craft and keeps buildings dry and weatherproof. Roofers install new roofs and guttering and repair and renovate old ones.

Metal roofing is becoming increasingly popular, and a well built metal roof can last up to 50 years. In fact, the roof of Chartres Cathedral in France is over a hundred years old and the original copper has oxidised to a pale green colour.

Metal roofers are skilled professionals, whose use of metal and fastening of joints are all essential to a well built, dry building. Safety is very important in this profession because of the height at which some work is carried out.

How did you train for WorldSkills?

It was easy to combine preparations for WorldSkills with my job, because I can practise at work. I trained on a work project with my expert, who had originally suggested I take part in skills competitions.
