Computer aided design (CAD), and the designers who use it,
produce design documentation in manufacturing, which includes
product drawings, paperwork and 3D models.
CAD is an important industrial art which is used by mechanical
engineers in many industries and specialisms. Computer design is
much quicker and more flexible than traditional drawing boards and
has revolutionised manufacturing design. It also reduced the risk
of human error, although designers still need to be accurate and
meticulous. These benefits have made CAD economically significant
in the last 10 years.
As with many computer based disciplines, this is a fast moving
area and designers have to stay up to date with developments to be
at the top of their profession.
